Research Interests and Background

In addition to my clinical practice, I am also active in research. My research interests center around the implementation and dissemination of trauma-informed interventions for comorbid psychological and physical health conditions, as well as seeking to understand psychosocial and cultural factors that contribute to trauma- and stress-related conditions and their common comorbidities. Further, I am interested in the development and testing of effective clinical training approaches, with the goal if improving dissemination of evidence-based mental health care.

My research experiences include examining the interaction of environmental exposures, trauma, and health symptoms in refugees, as well as studying the impact of bicultural identity conflict and other sociocultural stressors on Arab American women’s recovery from sexual assault. Over the past 10 years, I have contributed to the development and testing of novel emotional processing interventions for psychological trauma and health conditions such as chronic pain. Further, for my dissertation work, I combined my interest in evidence-based training and trauma-informed care and developed and tested a novel training protocol aimed at increasing therapists’ comfort with emotionally challenging therapeutic situations and enhancing their trauma processing skills.

My current ongoing research includes a project designed to understand pain providers’ utilization of trauma-informed approaches in the assessment and management of chronic pain.
